Alumni reunion (1977 - 1980)

Trip Down Memory Lane: Reunion of Alumni at Rajah Serfoji Govt College, Thanjavur, after 37 years.

It was a memorable trip down memory lane for the 50-odd alumni belonging to the 1977-1980 batch of the Rajah Serfoji Government College in Thanjavur when they re-united at their alma mater today after a gap of 37 years.
The reunion meet of the 1980 batch saw government officials, businessmen, teachers and professionals – a highly diversified group.
The reunion of alumni was made possible due to the efforts taken by Dr S S Rajendrann, former principal, Bharathidasan University Constituent College, Vedaranyam, Jayaprakash, a NRI living in Muscat, Advocate Gunasekaran, Madras High Court. These old friends got the addresses of all other classmates from their alma mater and established contact with their batch-mates via social networking sites and mobile phones and arranged the meet, Dr T Arivudainambi, Principal (in-charge), Rajah Serfoji Government College, said.

The prominent persons among the alumni who graced the occasion today included C Sridhar, Inspector General of Police, North Zone, Anbazhagan, a retired District Forest Officer, and Dr G Nirmala, Principal, Kunthavai Nachiar Government Arts College for Women, Thanjavur.

T Arivudainambi, in his presidential address, pointed out that the alma mater felt proud to see its alumni who have reached greater heights.

IG of Police C Sridhar, who spoke on the occasion, said that students like him could achieve greater heights in life due to the selfless and dedicated services of the then teachers. “Despite poor infrastructure, the teachers then were talented, dedicated and rendered selfless services. Only because of them, I have now risen to this position in my life”, Sridhar said.

Mr Sridhar also exhorted the alumni to contribute something to the development of their alma mater. “On seeing it, the students of this college in future will also get motivated to do something worthy to the alma mater”, he said.

Mr Sridhar also appreciated the efforts of the alumni in organizing the alumni meet and wanted that the alumni meet should be organized every year in the years to come. It was a spectacular sight when the old classmates reunited at their alma mater today after a gap of 37 years. The alumni expressed their gratitude and respect to their old teachers by presenting mementos and shawls. The alumni also shared jokes and recalled the happy moments of their college life. The teachers spoke about how proud they were to see all their students lead a successful life and reaping the rewards of their hard work.
