It was established in July 1961 with one undergraduate programme (B.Sc.Chemistry) with an intake of 25. The department became a post graduate department in the year 1981 with the starting of M.Sc. Chemistry programme. Due to the unceasing contribution and perseverance of the faculty members and the motivation and interest of the student community the department evolved as a research department with M.Phil. and Ph.D. (Full time and part time) programmes in the year 2008 and 2012 respectively.
