Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is one of the oldest and largest departments in Rajah Serfoji Government College. It was established in July 1961 with one undergraduate programme (B.Sc.Chemistry) with an intake of 25. The department became a post graduate department in the year 1981 with the starting of M.Sc. Chemistry programme. Due to the unceasing contribution and perseverance of the faculty members and the motivation and interest of the student community the department evolved as a research department with M.Phil. and Ph.D. (Full time and part time) programmes in the year 2008 and 2012 respectively. The department has many achievements to its credit. Students blossomed from the department are well placed all over the world in various fields of industry and education. A galaxy of experienced staff members is involved in academic, research and extension activities for the welfare and uplift of the student community.

| Goals:

  • To impart an in-depth knowledge in the various branches of chemistry
  • To promote research attitude and aptitude
  • To develop the analytical, computational and problem solving skills among the students and help them to clear competitive examinations like NET, SET and GATE.

| Objectives:

  • To motivate students to take part in competitive exams and to enhance their placement opportunities
  • To impart organizational behavior and time management
  • To inculcate entrepreneurial and employability skills and team spirit among students.

| Overview of the Course Structures

The college follows Choice Based Credit System in framing the curricular and the syllabus frame work and the evaluation pattern of the programmes and the courses. The syllabi for various courses are framed with the objective of providing the necessary knowledge base to the students to shape themselves with competency and knowledge in order to meet the requirements and challenges in the fields of employment, enterprise and research. The syllabus is also oriented with the required competency and knowledge to motivate the students to get through for the various competitive examinations like CSIR, SET and GATE. The course structure also provides opportunities to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge through Generic Electives, apart from the Discipline Specific Electives which develop the interest and motivation among the students to further their knowledge to achieve specialization in an area of knowledge. The department has introduced one research project work in the syllabus of the PG programme in order to create an aptitude for research among the students.
