Department of Zoology was established in the year of 1960. Currently this department is offering 6 full time courses (B. Sc. Zoology Tamil Medium and English Medium, M. Sc. Zoology, M. Phil. Zoology, Ph.D. Zoology) and 1 part time course (Ph. D. Zoology). It also takes part in the courses offered by the other departments of college viz. Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Biotechnology. This department has been recognized as a research centre by Bharathidasan University since January, 2010. There are 16 permanent and 1 guest faculty members, all holding Ph. D. degree along with 3 technical staff are dedicatedly working for the growth of this department. The student-teacher ratio is 25:1 for B. Sc., 20:1 for M. Sc., and 8:1 for M. Phil. courses offered by the department. Faculty members of Zoology operated various major and minor research projects from national funding agencies such as UGC, DST and CICT. Several Student projects with financial assistance from Tamil Nadu state government were also carried out. Staff members are regularly publishing their research findings in peer reviewed national and international research journals. Seminars and workshops are being conducted regularly for the welfare of students’ community with the financial support of CSIR-DRDO, ICMR-CSIR, ICMR-TNSCST, UGC and RGNYD. The department also house a small library with the collection of 3188 books and a museum in which about 1000 specimens of invertebrates, chordates and fossil collections are displayed. This museum is unique among zoology teaching departments having human embryo and stuffed mammals exhibits along with huge number of mollusc (specimens as well as fossil specimens).

Zoological Museum of PG and Research Department of Zoology, Rajah Serfoji Government College, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu own wide collections of more than thousand exhibits which have been collected since 1960, the year when the course on Zoology was introduced is the fame of this college. Dry and wet zoological specimens, plastinated specimens, animal skeletons, gastropod and bivalve shells, stuffed animals, fossils, human anatomical models, casts of dinosaurs and other exhibits in this museum are arranged systematically, provide a means for biological students to understand and get inspired on diversity, evolution, conservation and exploration of animal kingdom under one roof. Representations from phylum Porifera, Coelenterata, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata and Chordata are displayed in this museum. Some of the highlights of this museum are various developmental stages of human embryo, stuffed bear and civet cat, skeletal systems of man, crocodile, varanus and snake, carapace of turtles and tortoises, poisonous and non-poisonous snakes, rostrum of a giant sawfish, vertebral bones of a whale and fossils of Ariyalur. Exhibits are showcased professionally in display cabinets after proper preparation, fixation, restoration and preservation by trained staff in a neat and well illuminated ambience ensure the visitors an awesome and memorable experience. School and college students, and research scholars are invited to visit this museum on any working days of this college.
