Commerce

The commerce Department which was celebrating its Golden Jubilee year 2019 with a glorious history of 50 years was originally started in the year 1970 with an UG Programme (B.Com). Subsequently, in the year 2002 the PG Programme (M.Com) and in 2007, B.Com in the Second Shift, as an additional section were also started. It was recognised by Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli as a Research Department to conduct M.Phil Full-Time Research Programme in 2007 and the Ph.D. Research Programme in 2012. Presently, there are more than 500 students in the Commerce department, meticulously moulded by 15 dedicated Doctorate Professors. This Department successfully guided 208 M.Phil and 50 Ph.D. Degree holders so far.

| Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs):

Upon completion of the B.Com Degree Programmes, Students will be able to

  • PSO – 1 Become aware of the basic concepts in the areas of Marketing, Human Resources, Accounting, Insurance and Finance
  • PSO – 2Attain academic excellence with an ability to pursue higher studies, professional certification and research
  • PSO – 3 Use the ICT tools effectively in the field of commerce and accounting.
  • PSO – 4 Become aware of the various laws pertaining to the business environment
  • PSO – 5 Acquire the necessary skills to manage various positions in the corporate sector and in the field of education.

Upon completion of the M.Com Degree Programmes, Students will be able to

  • PSO – 1 Acquire in depth knowledge recent trends in commerce, accounting and management of all forms of organizations.
  • PSO – 2Apply qualitative skills to analyze and solve accounting problems.
  • PSO – 3 Analyse a decision and substantiate the decision making process through modeling and data analysis and interpretation .
  • PSO – 4 Evaluate the risk and returns associated with various investment avenues for an investment plan.
  • PSO – 5 Offer services as an accountant, GST practitioner, online trader, analyst or consultant or as an entrepreneur.

Upon completion of the M.Phil. Degree Programmes, Students will be able to

  • PSO – 1 Acquaint with the basic teaching methodologies and applying them in preparing lessons.
  • PSO – 2Analyse the latest corporate and contemporary issues
  • PSO – 3 Apply the recent research methods and techniques in commerce Course

Two Minor Research Projects sponsored by UGC were undertaken in the Dept of Commerce and one Major Research Project sponsored by ICSSR is presently going on in the Dept of Commerce.

Memorandum of Understanding:

To get prior Credits for the B.Com. Students if they pursue Professional Course from Insurance Institute of India (III), three more major electives were added to the B.Com Programme (Discipline Specific Elective Course) namely,

  • -Principles of Insurance
  • -Practice of Life Insurance
  • -Regulations of Insurance Business

An MoU was approved by Content Development Department, III, Bombay to this effect. Ours is the first ever Government College in the Country to have a tie up with III. This addition was also given approval in the 13th Academic Council Meeting held on 31.07.2019.
